Wind Energy?

Since one of the main goals of the Ecodistrict project is reducing greenhouse gas emissions, all possible energy sources should be evaluated. While geothermal is probably the most promising, there are a few places in the Ecodistrict that could might be able to produce modest amounts of energy with vertical wind turbines. In general average wind speeds in the Washington area are low but there are a few places where ...more »

Enhance Banneker Park

Please enhance Banneker park as tribute to this great regional native. A prominent statue and commemorative monument should be erected, as Banneker was responsible for mapping out Washington, with his extensive knowledge of astronomy (he also published several accurate almanacs, invented a fully functioning wooden clock, an irrigation system, etc. etc. etc.). Banneker was beloved by George Washington who appointed him ...more »

connection to fish market

The DC Fish Market is an important piece of local culture, a vibrant meeting-place for community socializing, and a commercial hub for local businesses. While the addition of retail food space might detract from the DC Fish Market's business, the plan could offset this impact and even enhance the Fish Market's role in the community by adding safer pedestrian access routes. Currently, pedestrians from 10th Street SW ...more »

Green Sound Barriers for I-395

This elevated freeway is a huge source of noise pollution in a very densely populated area (much more densely populated than Virginia and Maryland suburbs for which sound barriers were built.) Also, last I checked SW DC was an air pollution hot spot.

PROPOSAL: Build sound barriers covered with plants that will reduce air pollution in this area.

Geothermal Heating and Cooling

There are copious amounts of water available year-round at a steady temperature of somewhere between 54 and 57 degrees (Fahrenheit) underneath the Southwest Eco-district. The payback period for installing geothermal heating and cooling has varied between 4 and 12 years in Silver Spring Md and New York City. Nationally, one-sixth of our energy use is devoted to heating and cooling buildings. In 2009 about 35% of our ...more »

South Entrance to L'Enfant Plaza Metro Station

L'Enfant Plaza will be the main way residents and visitors access the improvements to Southwest. The three current entrances, however, are located too far north to be truly useful to access the best of SW and the closest of the three is closed on weekends. Adding a fourth entrance under the south awning of the HUD building would be ideal. A platform over the Yellow/Green line tracks on the south side of the station and ...more »
