L'Enfant Plaza will be the main way residents and visitors access the improvements to Southwest. The three current entrances, however, are located too far north to be truly useful to access the best of SW and the closest of the three is closed on weekends. The current owner of the land that the plaza part of L'Enfant Plaza occupies plans to replace it with yet another office block. A far higher use of this land and one in keeping with the objectives of this project would developing it as an extension of the Mall that would provide would provide a sheltered space for the sort of activities currently conducted on the Mall itself (festivals, etc). Couldn't the new 9th Street bridge that goes under L'Enfant Plaza be modified to include a pedestrian access up to the shopping mall, food court, and hotel? It seems like SW residents are virtually barricaded from this complex.
