10th Street Corridor

connection to fish market

The DC Fish Market is an important piece of local culture, a vibrant meeting-place for community socializing, and a commercial hub for local businesses. While the addition of retail food space might detract from the DC Fish Market's business, the plan could offset this impact and even enhance the Fish Market's role in the community by adding safer pedestrian access routes. Currently, pedestrians from 10th Street SW must meander around Banneker Park and then backtrack along Maine Ave, or else cut down the hill and cross Maine Ave in the middle of traffic, immediately at a highway merge before tunnels with poor visibility. While many pedestrians use this route every day, it is of dubious safety. Perhaps a bridge or crosswalk could be planned across Maine Avenue.
